Mission and Student Learning Outcomes

Mission

The mission of the Drama Department at the University of North Carolina at Asheville is to provide comprehensive theater education with the goal of producing original, creative, knowledgeable and caring theater artists that understand their responsibilities to their community, their art and their personal growth. The Drama Department will promote theater as a necessary art form through productions that challenge, enlighten and engage both the artists and the audience.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students must demonstrate basic skills in the interpretation and production of pre-existing texts.
  2. They must be able to express a personal value system based on their broad knowledge of the theatrical past.
  3. They must be able to apply skills and knowledge within a theatrical production and explain the personal and cultural significance of the production.
  4. They must be able to demonstrate mastery in one of the following areas: acting, design, directing, k-12 theatre arts licensure or theater history.

In addition, declared majors are expected to meet with the faculty each semester and present what production work they have been active in and what cultural, artistic and curricular connections that they have made.
